In 2001 our founder, Margaret Barker, volunteered at a community college as a reading tutor. She was assigned to a student who had a high school diploma but could not read so Margaret worked with him for five years. As a result, the student’s life changed and his success inspired our founder to start a much needed community-based adult literacy program in Albuquerque. In 2007 Ethos Literacy was incorporated, then called Reading Works, and we received our IRS non-profit determination. Since 2009, we have served over 1400 adults. Ethos Literacy has won awards from the Library of Congress and the National Literacy Directory. Volunteers, staff, students, board members, and donors have all contributed to our success. We are proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to our future!
